BRX Encryption Explained
These days boards can be designed in one country, shaped in another, and shipped to yet another country on the other side of the world. With global distribution and manufacturing, many valid security concerns are on shapers' minds. At the heart of those concerns is a single question:
How can I protect my designs from being copied and reproduced without my consent?
As an answer to that question, Aku Shaper has developed the proprietary BRX file format to encrypt and protect your boards. Once encrypted as a BRX file, nobody (not even yourself) will be able to copy or edit your design. Within the Aku Shaper software, only the features necessary for cutting your board will be enabled. No curves or data points will be visible.


How Does BRX Integrate With My Current Process?
Continue to use BRD files as normal for all your in-house design and manufacturing. When you need to send your design to another factory, just generate a BRX version through the File Menu and send it on its way.

Now, whenever anyone opens your .brx file they'll be greeted with:

And that's if you've given them the password to open it in the first place. Even with the password, the only curve they'll be able to see is the profile view within the machining tabs (without that it would be a little tricky for anyone to line the board up within the blank for cutting).



Future BRX Benefits
For starters, we're offering shapers the ability to lock down their files from unauthorized copying and editing. In the future, we hope to provide shapers with even more security features such as:
  • Factory Targeting — Only factories explicitly listed in the BRX can open and cut the board
  • Single / Limited Cuts — Limit the number of times your BRX file can be cut
  • Online Backups — Automatic backups of your BRX designs on the secure Aku Shaper server
We're taking a wait-and-see approach to the additional features, as we believe the current BRX protection is more than enough for most shapers. However, if you're a heavyweight and you'd like to see these additional features added, then make sure to tell us. If enough shapers request a specific feature, we'll add it.
